ABU DHABI – As many as 40,957 motorists have been caught and fined for using mobile phones while driving in Dubai, from January up until November last year, according to the Dubai Police.

In 2013, however, over 44,000 were issued tickets for using mobile phones while driving, Khaleej Times reported. The violation resulted in 111 accidents with six people losing their lives and 100 being injured. Director of General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui said that some motorists ignore traffic rules, despite continuous warnings from officials against any kind of actions that distracts them as it could endanger not only their lives but also of other road users.

He said that the Dubai Police will intensify their efforts to catch those who flout safety measures. Col Al Mazroui said since using mobiles is one of the major causes of fatal accidents, the police takes strict action against violators to curb such incidents.
