Pakistani student, Shah Mir Aizaz, gets 2nd prize at NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest 2015

The winners of the 2015 NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest 2015 were announced recently, and a Pakistani student from Karachi, Shah Mir Aizaz, got second prize for his project “Beyond Infinity – Eros Outer Atmosphere Settlement”.

Shah Mir Aizaz got second prize in Grade 10 for his design titled, “Beyond Infinity – Eros Outer Atmosphere Settlement” presented at NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest Design 2015 that was sponsored by the NASA Ames Research Center and the National Space Society (NSS).

What is NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest?

This contest puts high school students in the shoes of aerospace industry engineers designing a city in space that will be a home for over 10,000 people. Student engineers demonstrate creativity, technical competence, management skills, space environment knowledge, teamwork, and presentation techniques to conquer the problems inherent in siting and designing a Space Settlement.

The contest is taking place since 1994. NASA Ames sponsors an annual space settlement design contest for 6-12th grade students. This year it was contested by 994 students out of 3,007 students sponsored by 380 teachers.

Entries came from 21 countries: Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Nepal, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and Uruguay. U.S. entries were received from 14 states and territories: California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Virginia.
